The engraving by the French Botanical Artist was completed for the Book, Sylva of North America with the first English edition being published in 1817. This engraving by the French Botanical artist, Redoute, shows a green branch of the tree with a huge mature pine cone at the bottom with a younger cone at the top, a seed pod is shown to the left of the main branch. The tree was described thus in the mentioned book. This is the largest and most majestic among the resinous trees of the Old World. Until it was discovered in the North of Russia in 1770 it was believed to only inhabit the mountains of Lebanon in Asia Minor. The ancient peoples used this wood because of its duration, which would last many ages. The sacred historians inform us it was used for the building of Solomon's Temple and also employed in building the Apollo at Utica. The ancient Greeks and Hebrews also imported this wood from Mount Lebanon at a great expense, further proof of the value of this timber. The author says this tree was entirely neglected by our American ancestors with him only seeing a couple mature specimens in the new World. It sounds like he was alluding to the fact that these trees should be planted all over the United States because it would adapt readily to the American climate and young trees could easily be obtained in most every extensive nursery. Larix Cedrus. Botanical art print #105
