Garfield was the 20th President of the United States serving in 1881. The Republican Convention of 1880 was very fractured, not being able to decide on a nominee. Finally both front runners were rejected and the delegates nominated Ohio Congressman, James A. Garfield. The factionalism still did not end though, on July 02, 1881, angered that Garfield had not awarded him a public office, Charles J. Guiteau a member of the GOP Faction shot the President as he was boarding a train. Eleven weeks later he died. Garfield had once been a Preacher, the only United States President to be such, and it was said his thoughts sometimes seemed to issue forth at the podium "like solid shot from a cannon". Garfield's term as President only lasted 200 days from March 04 to September 09 in 1881. He was the last American President to be born in a log cabin, he was brought up in humble circumstances since his father died when James was 1 year old. Famous People art print #62
