In this painting the artist paints a tranquil scene of Lake Tahoe, with a couple trees in the foreground, smaller trees along the lake edge while a stand of evergreens are on a peninsula that juts out into the lake. In the background are high mountains which are probably the Sierra Nevadas. The subject matter of this artwork is typical of Bierstadt who is known for his detailed landscapes, especially those of the Rockies and Sierra Nevadas of the American Wild West. Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and lies between the states of California and Nevada, just west of Carson City Nevada. At a depth of 1,645 feet this is the 2nd deepest lake in the United States, being behind only Crater Lake in Oregon which is 300 feet deeper. Lake Tahoe is a major tourist attraction of the western United States, it is home to numerous ski resorts, summer outdoor recreation sports, winter activities and scenic attractions all add to the area's economy and reputation. The Nevada side of this large lake also features many gambling casinos. The Truckee River is the only outlet of this lake and drains only about 1/3 of the lakes water, while the other 2/3 of the water is evaporated due to the lakes large surface area.
