Monterey VA Strickler and Gilmor ten cents obsolete scrip 1861
A very rare ten cent obsolete scrip issued from the store of Strickler and Gilmor in Monterey VA on October 1, 1861 for sale by Brandywine General Store. In the book on Virginia obsolete money these are rated at R-6 on the rarity scale meaning it was thought only between 5 to 9 of these civil war bills still exist. Monterey was and still is a very sparsely populated town, the smallest county seat in the Commonwealth of VA. On the left is the VA state arms in an oak branch, the handwritten serial number is 1309. Our estimation of grade to be used as a reference only is very good with some losses and staining, but it might be a long time before you come across another one of these. The pictures show the front and back of the actual Monterey VA Strickler and Gilmor obsolete money that is for sale.
