Reni, Guido - Saint James the Greater Fine Art Religious Print
An archival premium Quality art Print of Saint James the Greater by Guido Reni for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist finished this oil on canvas during the period of 1636 to 1638. The size of the original artwork is 52 by 39 inches and now hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas. James the Greater was one of the twelve apostles and brother of John the Evangelist. He was among the circle of men that were the closest to Christ. James was present with Peter and John at the Transfiguration and again at the Agony in the Garden, when Jesus retired to the Mount of Olives to pray just before His arrest. In this painting, James is shown as Christ's Apostle, bearded and his dark hair is parted and falling on either side in the manner of Jesus. He also has his Pilgrim's staff through his arm. In order to heighten the empathy between the viewer and image, artists, such as Guido Reni, commonly depicted Saints in a more direct and intimate format. This was part of the Catholic Church's new stance to combat Protestantism and propagate the Catholic Faith, to make the images of Saints and Holy Figures more humanized. Religious art print #58
