A Museum Quality Art Print of the San Francisco Skyline an Aerial View for sale by Brandywine General Store. This aerial shot shows the smaller buildings in the front of the composition where there are still a few trees left, the large tall skyscrapers are in the back of this scene. Before the Europeans came to this area, it was home to two groups of Native Americans, the Ohlone and the Miwok. Francis Drake anchored his ship off Point Reyes in 1579 but he failed to discover San Francisco Bay. In 1769 the bay was found by Gaspar de Portola and in 1776 Juan de Anza led a group of settlers to the bay and built a fort called a presidio. In 1797 a mission was founded. In the early 19th century whaling ships and traders came to the bay. In 1835 an Englishman, William Richardson, founded a settlement by San Francisco bay and he called it Yerba Buena. During the 1830s and 1840s is when people finally started moving to the San Francisco area and the area has grown exponentially ever since. Picture #74
