A Museum Quality Poster of Wheeling West Virginia as viewed from Wheeling Island. Originally explored by the French and later surveyed by Christopher Gist in 1751 and George Washington in 1770. In the fall of 1769 Ebenezer Zane explored the Wheeling area and established claim to the land via tomahawk rights. The following spring he returned with his wife and younger brothers. They established the 1st European settlement in the Wheeling area naming it Zanesburg. This picture shows a tranquil view from across the river, showing all the tall buildings along the river's edge.
