$9.99
A Museum Quality Art Print of the Public Gaol or Jail at Williamsburg Virginia for sale by Brandywine General Store. The portion of the jail that is still standing was built in 1701 and has housed many famous and notorious criminals including the crew of Blackbeard the pirate who were captured in 1718 and brought to Williamsburg for their trial. Throughout most of the 18th century the grated windows and doors had no glass in them and there were no fires, except in the debtor's cells. Consequently many prisoners died of cold during severe winters, even so, this prison was run more humanely than most prisons in England at the time. Picture #477 an original historic print by Brandywine General Store.
