This French painter finished this oil on canvas in 1869, the size of the original is 14 by 22 inches and is now at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. This painting was one of the first the artist sold to Paul Durand - Reul, the art dealer who became an early major supporter of the Impressionist Artists. in addition to being a scenic landscape, this is also a family portrait. The driver of the carriage is Paul Valpincon who is shown with his wife, a wet nurse and in the nurse's lap is the couple's infant son, Henri. There is a small dog setting on the carriage box, looking down lovingly at the infant, so this must be a family dog. The women and baby are partly covered from the sun with an umbrella while the man has a stove top hat on his head. In the background you can see two horses racing with other spectators watching the horse race. Even with its title, the races have a minor role in the composition of this painting. The canvas was the artist's contribution to the first Impressionist exhibit in 1874. The Museum of Fine Arts purchased this painting in 1926 for 30,000.00. Famous Artists art print #117
