Hicks, Edward - Noah's Ark Art Print

An archival premium Quality Art Print of Noah's Ark by Edward Hicks for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist finished this oil on canvas in the year 1846 with the size of the original being 26 by 30 inches and now hangs in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Hicks was an artist who was also a Quaker Minister in Bucks County Pennsylvania. This unusual image of Noah's Ark is based on an 1844 lithograph by Nathaniel Currier, but Hicks gives the animals a beauty and dignity lacking in the litho. The grayish green horizon with looming black clouds intensifies the drama of the impending cataclysm. The calm procession of beasts has a stately rhythm that embodies the gravity of God's command that they enter the Ark to escape the approaching flood. This story is from the Old Testament the Book of Genesis Chapters 6 to 9. God makes it rain for 40 days and 40 nights to punish the wicked people of the land who have turned away from God. Noah is still a religious and righteous man, so God tells him to build this ark and to place this family and 2 of each of the animals that he can find. He also has the option to bring aboard any of the people of the land that will believe him, however no one believes Noah, so only he, his family and the animals are saved from the flood. At the end of 40 days, Noah sends out a dove each day until one day the dove comes back with a branch. Noah now knows that it is time to land and get off the ark. The prancing horses and a serious looking lion stare at the viewer, while pairs of elegant black and white striped zebras, giraffes, camels, tigers and hippos are among the animal pairs waiting patiently for the turn to get on the ark.
