Hicks, Edward - Penn's Peaceable Kingdom
An archival premium Quality art Print of Peaceable Kingdom by Edward Hicks for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist finished this oil on canvas around the year 1827. The size of the original artwork is 32 by 42 inches and is now at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas by gift of Miss Ima Hogg. The artist painted over 100 different examples of this painting and all were somewhat different. This is one of eight versions that had rhymes around the borders. Hicks believed that Penn's treaty with the Indians was a partial fulfillment of Isiah's prophecy, with the Quakers establishing a peaceable kingdom on Earth. The verse on this painting is as follows: When the Great Penn his famous treaty made, With Indian Chiefs beneath the elm tree's shade. The Wolf with the Lambkin dwell in Peace, his grim carnivorous nature there did cease. The Leopard with the harmless kid laid down, and not one savage beast was seen to frown.
