The artist finished this huge oil on canvas between the years 1876 to 1879. Vereshchagin was the most famous Russian painter during his lifetime. In 1874 due to the sale of several of his works to collector Pavel Tretyakov, the artist acquired enough funds to visit India. He and his wife went on a two year expedition to such places as Bombay, Madras, Delhi, Agra, Darjeeling and the Himalayas. Along the way he did sketches and research for future paintings. He was the first Russian artist to ever visit India to do paintings. The Pearl Mosque was the most accomplished and the grandest of all the paintings of his journey to India. He started work on this massive canvas in 1876 but was interrupted by the outbreak of the Russo Turkish War in 1877 when he briefly set aside this work and volunteered with the Russian Imperial Army. Upon his return to Paris in 1878 he started working on Pearl Mosque again and completed this artwork the following year. The Pearl Mosque was built in 1659 as a private Mausoleum for Aurangzeb, the 6th Mogul Emperor of India who reigned from 1658 through 1707. Famous artists art print #220
