Vermeer Jan Van Delft - Girl Reading Letter at an Open Window art print
An archival premium Quality art Print of Girl Reading Letter at an Open Window by Jan van Delft Vermeer for sale by Brandywine General Store. The original size of this oil on canvas is 32.7 by 25.4 inches and is now located at the Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden, Germany. This work of art was acquired in 1724 by August III, elector of Saxony, along with a number of other paintings, this one was thrown in for free to sweeten the deal. At that time, this was thought to be a Rembrandt. The scene shows a young woman standing in the center, facing in profile to an open window at the left. In the foreground is a table covered with the same oriental rug that is also in the painting "The Woman Asleep". On the rug is also the identical Delft plate with fruit. The girl's features are reflected in the window, while to the right the large green curtain forms a deceptive frame. During World War II, this picture was among the great works of art that were hidden for safety and were consequently spared from the British bombings. However, in 1945 these paintings were seized by the Red Army as booty and secretly taken to Moscow. When the question later arose for returning all the seized pictures back to Dresden, the Soviet Minister of Culture wanted to keep two paintings as a gesture of Goodwill, this one and a masterpiece by Giorgione. This showed the importance of this painting. In the end the goodwill proposal was dropped and this painting was returned to Dresden, along with all the others, in 1955. Old Masters art print #30
