Wheeling WV as viewed from Wheeling Island Art Print
A Museum Quality Print of the City of Wheeling, West Virginia as viewed from Wheeling Island for sale by Brandywine General Store. This city in the western part of the state lies along the Ohio river at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The population is around 28,000. The origin of the city's name is lost to history, but the most credible explanation is that the word comes from the Indian Lenni - Lenape phrase "wih link" or "wee lunk", which means "place of the head". This was in reference to a white settler who was scalped and decapitated. His severed head was displayed at the confluence of Wheeling Creek and the Ohio River, the site of present day Wheeling. Picture #169 a scenic landscape from a photograph in the Highsmith Collection.
